Una terra felice e strategica che ha costituito e costituisce un punto di partenza e di svolta per tutti quelli che vogliono andare verso le isole Eolie, Taormina, l’ Etna, Tindari o il parco dei Nebrodi. Immaginiamo quali sensazioni doveva evocare questo luogo se il Mito la chiamò “penisola del sole” e collocò sulle sue sponde gli armenti del Dio e la grotta di Polifemo visitata da Ulisse, proprio di fronte alle Isole del Re Eolo custode e governante dei venti. E sempre qui la storia incrociò i destini del Console romano Caio Duilio che vi batté in mare i Cartaginesi e di Ottaviano che sconfísse Pompeo aprendo per Roma il secolo del massimo splendore e potenza. Federico II di Svevia vi eresse uno dei suoi piú importanti castelli che oggi é il piu esteso di tutta la Sicilia. Giuseppe Garibaldi che ultimó la conquista della Sicilia e dormì sugli scalini della chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore mangiando pane e cipolla come raccontavano i popolani del rione marinaro di Vaccarella. Luigi Rizzo che da questo mare partì per andare ad affondare due corazzate austriache e decidere le sorti della prima Guerra Mondiale. Oggi Milazzo é una lingua di terra emersa che si protende nel basso mar Tirreno per circa sette chilometri verso le Isole Eolie, per le quali é da sempre il porto naturale e privilegiato di partenza.
